Demo meeting on public speaking and leadership by toastmasters international at New Town Library

New Town Library: Toastmasters International, a non-profit organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills in collaboration with New Town Library is organizing a demo session of Toastmasters at 3:30 p.m. on 14th March, at the New Town library. The session will include prepared speeches, impromptu speeches, evaluations and feedback to highlight the technique of Toastmasters. New Town Library: BUBBLE BLUE, an integrated daycare & montessori house is organizing a Teachers Training Course at New Town Library. Smart library for New Town

KOLKATA: A vacuum in New Town’s cultural landscape was filled with the New Town Library opening on Tuesday. The library occupies 6,000sq ft, divided equally between the second and the third floors of Nazrul Tirtha. “We had a small library in Swapnobhor. There is one on Rabindranath Tagore in Rabindra Tirtha. A Nazrul archive exists in this building itself. But there was no general library. For two years, we have worked to put together this library under an advisory committee headed by former National Library director general Arun Chakraborty,” said Debashis Sen, chairman of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation, which runs New Town. First digital library set to be unveiled in New Town

KOLKATA: The first smart, digital library in New Town that the NKDA started working on in May last year is all set to be unveiled in November. The library at Nazrul Tirtha will have e-books, e-subscriptions, e-readers that can be borrowed, audio books, online resources, digital archives, information centres and career guidance corners, along with newspapers, magazines and a coffee shop. For those not so tech savvy, a section for traditional books will also be there. NKDA officials said they would start with around 4,500 books and the number would slowly increase. “We have fixed November 12 as the tentative date for inauguration. State urban development minister Firhad Hakim is supposed to unveil the library,” an official said. Read full story

Art library to come up at Nazrul Tirtha

Kolkata: A state of the art library will come up at Nazrul Tirtha to facilitate young adults to read books. The library will come up in the second and third floors of Nazrul Tirtha. It will start with an initial stock of 4,500 books and it will be increased. The library is likely to be opened in November. The annual membership fee is Rs 1,000 and those living outside New Town can become the member of the library . The members can read the books on kindle and computers and there will be lending facility. There will be self-issuing system. There will be a children's corner and a coffee shop. There are proposals to introduce career counselling and foreign languages at the library. Read full story

New Town to host digital library soon

KOLKATA: New Town Kolkata Development Authority has started working on a design to set up a smart digital library in New Town. The library will have e-books, e-subscriptions, Kindle-like e-readers that can be borrowed, audio books, online resources, digital archives, information centres and career guidance corners along with newspapers, magazines and a coffee shop. The authorities recently held a meeting to discuss the project. "Apart from having various kind of books, a good public library also serves as a social meeting point where people can come and chat on different issues over a cup of coffee," an official said.
